Building Bridges & Navigating Polarisation: The Role of PR in an Age of Division

Building Bridges & Navigating Polarisation: The Role of PR in an Age of Division

Polarisation isn't just a buzzword – it's a reality we all face. From political ideologies to economic disparities and cultural divides, society is more fragmented than ever. A 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer revealed that only 47% of people trust the media globally, while 55% express distrust in their governments. As mistrust rises, PR’s role becomes clearer: it’s about restoring credibility and fostering open dialogue across divided groups.

But how are PR professionals stepping up to this monumental task?

Uniting Global Leaders for Climate Action

Take, for instance, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The COP28 summit in 2025 that became a defining moment in global climate diplomacy. In a time when climate action has often been bogged down by political and economic divides, PR played a pivotal role in bringing world leaders, scientists, and activists together in a shared mission: addressing the climate crisis.

With environmental concerns reaching a fever pitch, PR campaigns surrounding the summit emphasized collective action and common goals. The global "One Planet, One Future" campaign used compelling messaging to unite countries, urging both developed and developing nations to commit to emissions reduction and sustainable development. PR professionals worked with major international media outlets, global environmental organizations, and social media influencers to ensure that the summit’s messaging reached the hearts and minds of millions around the world.

Overcoming Polarisation in Health

In 2025, COVID-19 vaccine distribution continued to be a major global challenge. While many developed nations had successfully rolled out vaccines, parts of the Global South were still struggling. Additionally, misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines led to polarized views about public health measures, with skepticism dividing populations.

PR played a significant role in both addressing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring equitable access. International organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, alongside national governments, used PR strategies to educate the public, combat misinformation, and promote global vaccine solidarity.

Campaigns like "One World, One Health" were launched to highlight the importance of vaccine equity and remind the world that disease doesn't respect borders. PR professionals partnered with community leaders, celebrities, and social media influencers to directly engage with hesitant groups, providing clear, fact-based information about vaccine safety.

The Trusted News Initiative

The battle for truth is more urgent than ever. Misinformation has become a global pandemic, distorting realities, inflaming conflict, and eroding public trust. This is where PR can and must lead.

The “Truth in Media” initiative, launched by PR agencies globally in 2025, is a direct response to this challenge. It’s about ensuring that the PR industry remains a beacon of trust and integrity, focusing on ethical communication, fact-checking, and transparency. But it’s not just the PR industry that’s involved  major media outlets and tech giants have also taken up the cause. The Trusted News Initiative (TNI), founded by the BBC in 2019, brings together global media leaders such as AFP, Reuters, The New York Times, and tech companies like Google and Meta to combat misinformation.

Together, these organizations are developing tools to counter disinformation, improve media literacy, and promote factual reporting. Their efforts are a reminder that, even in an age of overwhelming noise, PR has the power and the responsibility  to restore the truth.

As we look toward World PR Day 2025, it is clear that PR professionals are at the forefront of navigating our fragmented world. The campaigns we run today  from the corporate world to politics and social movements, will determine whether we continue to drift further apart or find ways to come together. The challenges of polarisation are immense, but so too is the opportunity for PR to lead the way in fostering understanding, trust, and empathy. In this pivotal moment, PR professionals are tasked with building bridges, one message at a time.
